TOKYO, Feb 24 - Takashimaya Co Ltd, Japan'sthird-largest department store operator, said it planned to openits first store in China in 2012 to help it grow outside itsshrinking home market. The company said it would open an eight-floor store inShanghai, which has a sizable wealthy population and an expatcommunity that it hopes to attract. Pianist Yuja Wang opens Lucerne FestivalPublished: 24 Aug 2009 06:02:02 PST

By Ni Min Chinese pianist, 22-year-old Yuja Wang thrilled international audiences with her opening performance alongside conductor Claudio Abbado at the Lucerne Festival in Summer August 12, with classical music fans in China now anticipating the premiere of the festival in Beijing next month. The Beijing reprise follows the month-long music event in Lucerne, Switzerland and runs from September 20-25. Usually, musicians who work with Abbado in his piano concerto are well-known masters such as Maurizio Pollini. However this year Abbado made an exception. “Last year, when Claudio Abbado saw me playing Franz Liszt’s sonata on French television, he compared me to talented female pianist Martha Argerich and then sent me an invitation to cooperate. In March this year, we had our first cooperation and this is the second one,” Wang explained. Born in Beijing in 1987, Wang began studying piano at age 6 and entered Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music when she was 7. Her earliest public performances took place in China, Australia and Germany. She entered the Morningside Music Summer Program at Calgary’s Mount Royal College and then moved to Canada to study with Hung Kuan Chen and Tema Blackstone at the Mount Royal College Conservatory. In 2002, when Yuja was 15, she won Aspen Music Festival’s concerto competition and moved to the US to study under Gary Graffman at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she graduated in 2008. She signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon, a German classical record label, in January and released her debut album Sonatas and Etudes in February in the US. Wang is famous for her rapid style and unbelievable speed. While a guest on YouTube Symphony Orchestra, she played Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s technically difficult Flight of the Bumble Bee and her hands became a blur across the keyboard, earning her further recognition for her abilities. She was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having “a practically superhuman keyboard technique with artistic eloquence that is second to none.” Despite being credited for her skills, Wang said that she still has a long way to go. “In the past two years, I was just interested in showing technique. However, as I am becoming more experienced and mature, I want to express my music in a more profound, emotional way. Of course, audiences are happy and to see technique-based performances, but this is not my original intention,” Wang explained. “Louder and faster playing may excite people but it can be forgotten easily at the same time. In contrast, an emotional performance can live in people’s hearts forever and this is what I am striving for,” she added. For the opening of the Lucerne Festival in Summer, Wang and Abbado cooperated to present Piano Concerto No 3 in C major, Op. 26 by Sergei Prokofiev. “The piece was chosen by Abbado and I think it is quite suitable for an opening concert. It is a vivid and exciting work in which the soloist and orchestra play their own strong roles during the performance. It demonstrates the charm of the orchestra while revealing the delicate sound of the piano. When we were on the stage, there was a wonderful interaction between the orchestra and Abbado,” Wang explained. Despite her confidence of the piece and performance, Wang said that she was surprised by the audience’s overwhelming response. “I never expected an encore. The audience was so enthusiastic that they moved us. We picked a delicate and mild p草原旅游 过滤器 seo対策 外汇保证金交易 wow account Learn Chinese

Haitong moves to buy out TaifookPublished: 22 Nov 2009 09:02:01 PST

By Sun Zhe Haitong Securities reached an agreement to buy out Hong Kong-based Taifook in an attempt to gain international experience as it expands. This purchase by Shanghai-based Haitong, the country's second largest brokerage, is the first takeover of a Hong Kong brokerage by a mainland counterpart. Haitong will buy all of NWS Holdings' 62 percent, or 432 million shares of Taifook, at HK$5 ($0.65) per share for a total of HK$2.16 billion ($316.4 million). Haitong's rivals in the acquisition included Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and China Construction Bank, said a report Sunday in China Times, citing an anonymous Haitong insider. "The purchase of Taifook will give Haitong some international experience, which will come in handy when the international board is launched on the Shanghai Stock Exchange next year," Zhu Xiaodong, a Beijing-based financial analyst, said Sunday. Multinationals will be allowed to have public offerings on the A-share market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange next year, Tu Guangshao, Shanghai's vice mayor, said in early August. Founded in 1973, Taifook was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1996. It now has representative offices in Shanghai, Beijing, and six other cities on the mainland. Mainland brokerages prefer to go to Hong Kong first as they attempt to become more international, said Tan Ruyong, a professor with Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. "The firms need to learn to swim in the ocean," said Tan. "The mainland market is more like a small pond." Buying a Hong Kong brokerage is a shortcut into the market, as it lets the company avoid complicated procedures required to start a subsidiary of its own. Haitong shares were suspended from trading last Monday. Shares of Taifook and NWS also stopped trading in Hong Kong last week.

Punchline Comedy ClubPublished: 21 Sep 2009 10:02:02 PST

Comedians from the UK performing on stage. By Jennifer Eden After producing back-to-back successes in Beijing eight years ago, Asia's popular Punchline Comedy Club is returning to the city with three of the UK's most sidesplitting comedians in its stride. Originally fi nding success with shows at Hong Kong's Viceroy 15 years ago, founder and comedian John Moorhead took Punchline tocities across Asia and came to the Chinese mainland with a string of top-notch comedy acts in 2000 and 2001. Selling out shows and packing venues at the time, the club went low-profile for a while and is gearing up for a major relaunch next week. "It's such a great release from the stress of everyday life in the city," organizer Ian Burns told the Global Times. "It is so easy to get caught up in the madness of life and it can really get you down," Burns added, "everyone leaves the comedy club with massive grins on their faces." Burns said that you do not have to have seen stand-up comedy before to enjoy the show, explaining that for much of the audience, it is a completely new experience. "The first time I saw stand-up was in China," he said. "I simply loved it!" Next week's performance in Beijing sees three of the UK's top comedians take to the stage, including one of England's most well known female comics. Mandy Knight is a graduate of Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and was the fi rst female compare of London's famous The Comedy Store. Labeled by The Independent, a UK-based newspaper, as "a virtuoso comedienne," Knight will join two of her male counterparts in Beijing. Karl Spain is a veteran performer from Ireland who has taken his popular routine to the US, Middle East, Australia and England. With performances at The Comedy Store and on The Stand Up Show and The Late Late Show, Burns said that Beijingaudiences should really enjoy Spain's approach to life. Completing the trio is Carey Marx who began performance life as a sleight-of-hand magician. Marx is very popular overseas and hosts the comedy tent at the annual Reading, Leeds and Glastonbury festivals. Burns said that while China has a solid foundation of local comedians and a regular influx of artists from the US, British humor is completely different. In the past, the majority of the Punchline Comedy audience has been expats, particularly those from the UK and Europe, however this time around, Burns said that he expects more Chinese to be enjoying UK humor. He explained that the pace of the comedy and the rate at which the performers deliver their lines is very fast. "When we first put on the shows almost 10 years ago, there were't that many Chinese who could keep up with the jokes, now there are plenty," Burns laughed. He added that the increase not only in the number of Beijingers who can understand the language, but also those who get the context of British humor, has been significant in recent years. "It is important to be familiar with the accent and the current topics to really understand the jokes," Burns commented. "Then you can be assured of a really entertaining and seriously side-splitting time." "After watching TV shows like Friends I knew something about comedy. Now I'm in love with it. It makes me laugh and relax," said Zhang Xiurong after watching a Punchline stand-up show in Qingdao. While next week's performance will gauge the possibility of future productions in Beijing, the comedy club is planning a "who's line is it anyway" evening involving five comedians on the stage at once and incorporating improvisation and audience participation. "We did a show like this in Qingdao recently," Burns said. "It wXP系统下载 内蒙古旅游 Waterproof socks インプラント 被リンク

    * China manufacturing survey improves, signals recovery * Asianshares reverse falls on hopes of more China spending * Obama talks up U.S. economy as auto sales plunge 40 pct * Australia economy shrinks 0.5 pct in Q4 BEIJING, March 4 - China's manufacturing downturnshowed tentative signs of bottoming out on Wednesday, offeringa rare glimmer of hope for the world economy mired in its worstslump in decades and helping lift Asian stocks. Underscoring the severity of the crisis, U.S. auto salesplunged more than 40 percent in February, existing home salesplumbed record lows and Australia's long-resilient economyfinally succumbed to global headwinds, shrinking unexpectedlyby half a percent in the final quarter of last year. With the United States, the euro zone and Japan all deep inrecession and the list of economies shifting into reversegetting longer almost every week, all eyes are on Beijing andits efforts to revive growth in the world's third-largesteconomy. The Chinese economy slowed sharply late last year and thegovernment has ramped up investment, pledging nearly $600billion in extra spending to step into the breach left by acollapse in exports and a downturn in the domestic propertysector. A third monthly improvement in China's official PurchasingManagers' Index and the first rise in output since Septembersuggested those efforts were beginning to bear fruit. "China's economy is possibly on the road to a sustainablerecovery," said Zhang Liqun, a government economist whocomments on the survey. "Policies are beginning to show their effectiveness, supporting quite fast economic growth," he said. CHINESE PROMISE In a sign how much depended on China's success, remarks bya local economic and planning official that Beijing will boostits original stimulus plan buoyed Japanese machinery stocks andhelped the Nikkei finish 0.9 percent higher. Shares elsewhere in Asia also crept up after spending mostof the day in the negative territory, dogged by persistentworries about the health of the world financial system andballooning costs of averting an all-out meltdown. "The China news is positive as it's the only country that'shelping the global economy today," said Mitsushige Akino, chieffund manager at Ichiyoshi Investment Management. However, private economists voiced doubts about whether aChinese recovery can last given the dramatic collapse in globaldemand on which Beijing has relied for years to act as theworld's growth engine. That collapse was evident in U.S. auto sales data, a gaugeof consumer sentiment that showed a 16th consecutive monthlydrop that brought volumes to levels last seen almost threedecades ago. U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged the data suggestedanother dismal quarter for the world's biggest economy, butinsisted Washington would succeed in its efforts to revivelending and said that Wall Street stocks were a "potentiallygood deal." Sinopec to raise oil, refining output Published: 24 Aug 2009 17:02:02 PST

China's Sinopec Corp, the world's No. 2 oil refiner, said yesterday it plans to raise its crude oil and refining output by 10 percent by 2011, as part of a broader overseas expansion. The newly announced targets for Sinopec come a day after the company posted record quarterly profits that greatly exceeded expectations, sending its shares up as much as 4.9 percent to an 11-month high yesterday. Sinopec – whose State-run parent engineered China's largest overseas buyout deal with its $7.24 billion bid for Swiss oil explorer Addax Petroleum – said it will "actively explore overseas oil and gas resources to enhance its overseas oil and gas production and profitability." In a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Sinopec said it aims to refine 202 million metric tons of crude oil per year by 2011. That represents an increase of 9.8 percent from its 2009 target of 184 million tons of crude oil. Sinopec is targeting crude oil output of 43 million tons and natural gas production of 17 billion cubic meters by 2011. Earlier this year, Sinopec said it aims to produce 42.4 million tons of crude oil and 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2009. It estimates domestic oil product sales will reach 135 million tons in 2011. Shares of Sinopec were up 1.2 percent at HK$7 ($0.90) midway through the Hong Kong trading day. It announced Sunday its first-half profit figures, showing earnings of 22.0 billion yuan ($3.22 billion) in net profit in the second quarter, based on Reuters calculations. China urges insurers to broaden investment portfoliosPublished: 29 Dec 2008 17:37:17 PST

Dec. 29, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China's insurance companies have been urged to try their best to broaden their investment portfolios and widen their investment channels in the face of tremendous challenges posed by the global financial turmoil and economic recession, said Wu Dingfu, chairman of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC), at the CIRC's annual meeting on Saturday, sources reported. Wu warned that the ongoing economic crisis might get worse, with dampening demand for insurance policies and endangering domestic insurers linked to troubled overseas financial institutions. He said insurers should invest more in infrastructure construction projects, acquire stakes in companies and financial institutions, and expand in rural markets, in a bid to diversify their income sources amid the worsening credit crunch.
